Where It All Began: The Story Behind Peace Apostolic Church

The story of one man's hunger for God and how it became a movement that has transformed thousands of lives.

Our story begins not in a sanctuary, but in a living room in Watts, California, where a man hungry to know God sat with his grandmother-in-law, Willie Ann Tucker, searching for truth. That man was Howard Arthur Swancy—a successful broadcast media executive at KCBS who felt the Lord tugging on his heart, calling him toward something greater than career achievement.

On October 20, 1971, Howard and his wife Cynthia knelt side by side at the altar of Apostolic Faith Home Assembly and received the precious gift of the Holy Spirit. From that moment, known as the "Holy Ghost twins," they vowed to always serve God and do the work of the Lord. What began as a personal encounter with the divine became a calling that would touch thousands of lives.

For ten years, Bishop Swancy served faithfully—teaching Sunday school, preaching sermons, evangelizing in nursing homes, hospitals, and prisons. Then, on Mother's Day 1981, supported by his wife and three young daughters in their home's living room, he opened the doors to Peace Apostolic Church. It was a humble beginning with an extraordinary promise: that anyone seeking God would find salvation, transformation, and the fullness of the Holy Spirit.

For four decades, Bishop Swancy remained steadfast and immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord. Under his leadership, Peace Apostolic grew from that living room to its current home in Carson, California. Dubbed the "Soul Saving Salvation," thousands were baptized in Jesus' name and filled with the Holy Spirit. The church became a spiritual home where the Word was preached unapologetically, lives were changed completely, and families served together in ministry.

Bishop Swancy's greatest joy was seeing all three of his founding daughters—Tamara, Monique, and Natalie—and their families serve alongside him. His legacy was not built on programs or buildings, but on the souls saved, the families restored, and the believers equipped to spread the Gospel.

On January 10, 2021, Bishop Howard Arthur Swancy was called home to glory. Yet the foundation he laid remains unshakeable. Today, Peace Apostolic Church stands at the threshold of a new era—not abandoning the truth that has anchored us for over 40 years, but carrying it forward with renewed vision and clarity. We remain unapologetically Apostolic, committed to the apostolic doctrine of Acts 2:38, and dedicated to preparing anyone who will listen for the soon coming return of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Our founder may have gone to be with the Lord, but his mission lives on in every soul that encounters Jesus at Peace Apostolic Church. We are a church built on sacrifice, sustained by the Holy Spirit, and propelled by the same calling that brought Bishop Swancy to his knees in 1971: to know God and make Him known.
